Akshay Kumar With Saugandh, launched his career in 1991, and Khiladi, an action thriller, marked the beginning of his first commercial triumph. The movie made him a recognised action star in the 1990s and paved the way for several more Khiladi movies as well as other action movies like Mohra (1994) and Jaanwar (1999). Although Yeh Dillagi (1994), his first attempt at romance, was well welcomed, Kumar expanded his range of roles during the following ten years.

His roles in the comedies Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), Singh Is Kinng (2008), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Phir Hera Pheri (2006), and Dhadkan (2000), Andaaz (2003), and Namastey London (2007) helped him gain recognition (2008). Kumar received Filmfare Awards for his demeaning performance in Ajnabee (2001) and his hilarious performance in Garam Masala (2001).

During this period, the model coordinator father of one of his students suggested Kumar be included in modelling, which ultimately resulted in a modelling job for a furniture dealership. As a result of making more money on the first two days of the shoot than he would have made in a single month, Kumar decided to pursue a career in modelling. He provided unpaid assistance to photographer Jayesh Sheth for 18 months in exchange for photographing his initial body of work.
