Cuttputlli, an air-popped mystery that aspires to be categorised as a slow-burn, feels like one of the episodes of C.I.D. that keeps you engaged without ever striving to be exceptional. It’s the type of movie where the hero has to point out an apparent element before the cop notices it. The one redeeming grace is that it doesn’t overtly try to make us nervous by using editing techniques or ominous noises.
It follows a serial murderer who brutally murders adolescent schoolgirls in the picturesque Himachal Pradesh town of Kasauli and leaves the mutilated faces of Cinderella dolls as his mark, staying true to the original Tamil film Ratsasan (2018). Arjan Sethi (Akshay Kumar), a sub investigator who once dreamed of being a filmmaker and specialised in telling tales of serial murderers, is after him.
Arjan, who was rejected by the producers, joins the police on the advise of his brother-in-law Narinder (Chandrachur Singh), and utilises his knowledge on psychopaths to solve the crime. Arjan’s techniques are first mocked by his stern SHO Parmar (Sargun Mehta), but as the murders continue, he proves to be the best candidate to solve the case.
By halftime, a perverted schoolteacher is the target of suspicion. However, we can tell that filmmaker Ranjit Tewari wants us to bargain with both the red herrings in the mountains with one hour left. The voyage between the twists isn’t interesting enough, however, and the lacklustre finale wears one out. There is just one scene in this really depressing novel that causes us to cry. The most of the time, it reads like a newspaper crime narrative with the facts provided but little room for interpretation. The relationship between Arjan and instructor Divya (Rakul Preet Singh) likewise develops in a predetermined manner after the first spark.
The good news is that the action scenes this time around don’t need Akshay to pull off absurd acrobatics, making Arjan credible. There are times when the actor’s natural simplicity emerges, giving the audience a break from the pursuit.
However, placing Akshay in a dramatic tension has its limits since no amount of airbrushing can make the actor seem 36, and his unstoppable image prevents the filmmakers from creating even the slightest degree of fear. When he performed Ratsasan, Vishnu Vishal wasn’t a well-known actor.
Therefore, when he outperformed his haughty elders, the story gained traction. No such feeling is there; while he may not be a one-man army in this specific production, Akshay Kumar is still the star of the show. The actor should be commended for experimenting with several iterations of the same basic structure, but he is approaching them with the concentration of a well-oiled mechanism that is more effective than thrilling.
Once again, the underappreciated Chandrachur shines in a short portion. Sargun is cast in an intriguing position, but she comes off as the squad leader policeman a bit too self-consciously. A few additional layers in her persona would have been beneficial. The gifted Rakul Preet Singh seems to be investing in her future by taking on modest roles alongside big actors. Her performances are a lot like this basic thriller with little character development and no clear author.

I was eager to see this film because I love murder mysteries, especially the ones with serial killers, and because Akshay Kumar is one of my all-time favourite actors. It had all the proper ingredients: a beautiful setting, a compelling story, well-known actors. However, the acting and directing were horribly lacking.
Since Chandrachur Singh and Hrishitaa Bhatt never acted properly in the past, it is not surprising that they didn’t do so this time. What astonished me was that Akshay completely failed to give the role justice. Do I have anything missing? … Oh, and Rakul Preet Singh and Sargun Mehta were also in the film. I’ll leave it at that.
Few young performers, in my opinion—a little saving grace—really performed well. In a nutshell, unwatchable.
Ranjit Tewari created the excellent cuttputlli. Although it is a replica of a south Indian film, Akshay and Rakul have drastically altered it. did credit to their parts, while Akshay was outstanding as always in the role of the policeman.
