Jersey is really a remake of the sports-drama movie of the same name from 2019 that was similarly written and directed by Tinnanuri, had a similar main premise, but was performed in Indian Telugu and featured Nani as Arjun. The first Jersey received favourable reviews and was named a winner at the Critics’ Choice Film Awards, Zee Cine Awards Telugu, National Film Awards, and South Indian International Movie Awards.
The popularity of the Jersey reboot in 2019 therefore raised concerns over whether the movie was based on a real tale or not, prompting many people to assume that it was based on Raman Lamba’s life. Indian cricket player Lamba was gifted and well-liked, but he passed away too soon from an internal haemorrhage three days after being struck in the head during a game in 1998. Jersey tells the story of a very gifted Ranji player named Arjun Talwar (Shahid Kapoor), who leaves cricket at the age of 26 and chooses to pick up the sport again ten years later. Arjun aims to do this while also granting Kitu’s (Ronit Kamra) wishes for a jersey and a chance to see his father play cricket. Arjun has emotional upheaval and conflicts with his wife Vidya Talwar (Mrunal Thakur), who is responsible for all of the family’s financial obligations, along with this voyage.
Nevertheless, despite his seeming inability, Arjun continues to pursue his goal of joining the Indian national cricket squad. His coach Madhav Sharma (Pankaj Kapur), who also serves as a father figure to him, is a source of comfort for him.
Jersey is filled with passion, but it lacks the suspense that would keep you interested. And the movie’s over three-hour running duration only makes matters worse.
First off, the romance between Arjun and Vidya and their battle to persuade her South Indian father to give his daughter to a Punjabi family seems a little too extended. The filmmaker makes comments about the cultural differences between North and South India in an attempt to add a hint of humour to these sequences, but the quips fall flat.
