The Kasmir Files, The movie takes place in 1990, at the start of the anti-Indian uprising that has raged for three decades in Kashmir under Indian administration and continues now. It promises to portray the tale of the Pandits’ exodus from Kashmir, a small Hindu minority among the predominately Muslim population of the area.
Even before the movie was published, its trailer had prompted public interest litigation on the grounds that its “inflammatory scenes are sure to spark communal bloodshed,” according to early reviews in the Indian media, which deemed the film to be fundamentally Islamophobic, dishonest, and a provocation. The director had argued in his defence that “every shot, every word in my film is true.”
The Kashmir Files gained an odd endorsement a few days after its publication. As a writer and documentary filmmaker whose work has focused on Kashmir for almost 20 years, I have always been perplexed by the facts – or lack thereof – behind the community’s exodus in 1990. I should say my community because I am a Kashmiri Pandit. Even the most basic concepts lack sufficient clarity.
What is certain, in your opinion? We can say that starting in the middle of 1989, Kashmir saw the targeted killings of numerous important members of its Hindu minority, which sparked a general feeling of fear and unease. In the same months, numerous Muslims in Kashmir—political activists, police officers, and government officials—were also murdered.
All of this was a part of the broader political uprising of the time, which foreshadowed future events that would overthrow the status quo. We also know that some Kashmiri Pandit families started to flee in dread at the beginning of 1990. Though it turned out to be tragically permanent for the most, their departure was probably only meant to be a temporary step.
In the decade that followed, Kashmir was nevertheless plagued by large-scale demonstrations and a full-fledged armed insurrection that had as its only goal independence from India. The ruthless counterinsurgency that came next completely overtook life for everyone in Kashmir, and the ongoing bloodshed and fear drove the Pandit minority and a sizeable number of Muslims out of the region. We are aware that two horrifying massacres—of 23 people at Wandhama in 1998 and of 24 men, women, and children at Nadimarg in 2003—were followed by the final waves of Kashmiri Pandit emigration.
Despite all of this, at least 4,000 Kashmiri Pandits are known to have remained in their homes. They have persisted in residing in Kashmir, dispersed throughout the valley rather than in safe ghettos. Their lives are difficult since they don’t have extended family or community networks and live in what frequently feels like a combat zone. However, neither is it simple for their Muslim neighbours, with whom they share one of the most militarised areas in the world.

It also did not appear overnight; rather, it had a past that could be traced at least as far back as 1947 and the vivisection of the princely state of Jammu & Kashmir. It also had a past marked by earlier murders and substantial population shifts.
